American Culture

I read this pithy statement somewhere the other day about American culture. The author was quoting an apparently well-known adage, but this was the first time I heard it. I thought it was quite descriptive:

Americans worship their work,
Work at their play,
And play at their worship.

Indeed!

True True,
But it seems to me that the overall quality of all three has declined. We may worship work, but I would argue that the quality has declined. I saw an interesting thought that the reason many people hide and spend all their time at work is because homes are not made a sanctuary anymore from the outside world. Since homes are not peaceful, it is easier to be at work away from the family. Sad sad sad.

Not to mention that our "sanctuaries" at church are hardly that anymore either! ("Sanctuary" meaning "a sacred place.") We are so Gnostic that we don't have any "sacred places." That just sounds like some sort of medieval, magical hubbub. All that matters is me 'n' Jesus. So my "worship center" is really no different than a movie theater or other place of entertainment. Somewhere where I can feel comfortable and enjoy myself. (Big captain's chairs with cup holders would be a plus.)
